I feel a bit guilty for the photograph of the farmstead house and sunflowers (facing page), as in my desire to get to that exact spot as the sun was setting, I outran a 70-year-old photographer weighed down by large format gear. Not my finest moment, but it was worth it. Why that spot? Because the late autumn sunflowers, especially the nodding plant in the bottom of the frame, were a great metaphor for the falling house. Both were near the end of their useful lives. Both had served well.

The church steeple stands tall (top left), straight and proud, but it is evident to us, by the flaking paint and missing shingles, that it cannot do so for much longer. But there is a hint of freshly painted doors at the bottom of the frame, so we know it might not, quite yet, be abandoned. We are left wondering its fate.

The third photograph (bottom left) is a fairly unemotional study of shape and form. A compelling example of the mantra “all light is good,” this image was unmistakably made in full sun close to noon when most other photographers were inside watching television or eating lunch.

Why do these subjects lend themselves so well to black & white? It’s probably because, at this point, these structures are primarily defined by their shapes and forms. Colors have long since faded or, even if they still remain, have become irrelevant.
